You don’t need a prescription, a supplement, or a subscription to feel genuinely good. Some of the most reliable dopamine boosts available to us cost nothing at all: exercise, breath, movement, and time spent aligned with nature.
In the short video below, I talk through the simple, accessible ways the body and brain release dopamine and the other “happy chemicals” — serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin — without needing anything external. When clients come to me feeling flat, anxious, or stuck, one of the very first things we look at is whether their nervous system is getting any of this free medicine at all.
Where to start
- Move daily, even briefly. A brisk walk outdoors does more for mood regulation than most people expect — the combination of movement, daylight, and fresh air is a compounding effect, not just one input.
- Breathe on purpose. Slow, deliberate breath shifts the nervous system out of fight-or-flight and toward a state where the body can actually register pleasure and calm.
- Get outside. Natural light, greenery, and open horizon lines are consistently linked to lower stress hormones and a better baseline mood.
None of this replaces deeper therapeutic work when it’s needed, but it is the foundation everything else is built on. A nervous system that’s depleted has a much harder time doing the emotional work of therapy, or of a relationship. Fill the tank first.
This is one of the practices Maya weaves into her individual therapy work and her Come Home to Yourself program.
